I created a real-time 3D model of the Gunblade weapon from Final Fantasy VIII, named "Revolver." My goal was to match the level of detail found in the latest Final Fantasy games. The "Griever" engraving on the blade was made using an alpha that I drew in Adobe Illustrator, which I then stenciled onto the high-poly model in ZBrush. I also wanted the weapon to be functional, so I made the crane and ejector rod rotate independently from the frame for realistic shell reloading.
For the modeling process, I used ZBrush and Autodesk Maya to create both the high- and low-poly versions, refining the high-poly model in ZBrush. Baking and texturing were done in Substance Painter, and the model features a single texture set with 4K resolution, covering both the internals and the shell for close-up renders.
The process was really enjoyable, especially designing the cylinder that holds the ammo, which turned out to be the most intricate part. As a personal touch, I named the headstamp on the shells after a location from Final Fantasy VIII, Balamb Garden.
This model has 26166 tris.
